Torah Class THEFT-2/One Language, One Matter and One Religion
”These are the families of Noah’s children”
”And all the Earth was of one language and of one matters…”
After the Flood, society changed from a peaceful, ideal community to ruthless tyranny and ORGNAIZED THEFT. This took place gradually, in stages. We should pay attention to the story, since this may repeat itself even in our time.
1: Peace of Earth
The Torah describes the first generations after the Flood in the following few sentences:
“This is the history of the Children of Noah
And to them were sons born after the Flood… (Genesis 10:1)
These are the families of the sons of Noah after their generations in their nations
And from these were the nations divided in the Earth after the Flood. (Genesis 10: 32)
And all the Earth was of one language and of one matter…”
The Formation of the Seventy Noahide Nations
Noah lived a long life. He even met Abraham, ten generations after him, when Abraham was 58 years old (A hint: the Hebrew name ‘Noah’ is numerically equal to 58) and taught him the Seven Commandments (Midrash.) Abraham later also met Shem, Noah’s firstborn son, who headed his Torah Academy near Jeru-Salem. Hence there is a continuity between Noah, Shem and Abraham.
But to most of his descendants, Noah was obsolete. His teaching was either distorted (as we see in the Babylonian myths about the Flood) or totally forgotten. IDOLATRY took over and prevailed. The Torah, however, focuses on the evolution of THEFT, conducted in large scale by EMPIRES based on FORCED SLAVERY, ABDUCTION, and ORGENAIZED THEFT.
The text (Genesis 10: 2-32) tells us that after the Flood, the Children of Noah spread all over Earth. The Seventy Families of Noahide Nations were formed. Their list comprises of three groups:
The Children of Ham who settled in the Middle East, Mesopotamia, Egypt and Africa
The Children of Yeffet who settled in India, Persia and later in Europe; among them the Greek, the Romans and other Indo- European nations.
The Children of Shem who settled the Middle East and the Arabia Peninsula; among them the Israelites, the Amonites, Moabites, Arabs, and more.
Almost every nation today can trace its origin to one or several of these primordial Noah’s Families of Nations.
Their common, original culture is described by the verse as:
“One language”: They spoke a primordial Hebrew
“One matters”: the verse has several meanings:
(1) One matter: One BUSINESS: They Settled, farmed, and produced crops and created wealth
(2) One matter: One PASSION to OWN land and tangible items…
(3) One MARKET: to TRADE and spread wealth (‘Canaan’ means a trader)
(4) One matter: PEACE and BROTHERHOOD. The Seventy Nations y recognized and respected each other borders. This is important, since the memory of that ancient would resurface late in other stories of the Bible. For instance: The prophet Bilaam charges Israel in Moses’ time) of violating this ancient Noah’s Covenant of peace between the nations (as rash says there.)
(5) One matter: IDIVIDUALITY. Living on private farms, prompted them to cherish individuality and private ownership not unlike in the American West.
(6) One matter: SAME FAITH: They all followed their forefather Noah’s teaching
(7) One matter: One G-d: They followed YHVH ELKM’s Oneness.
Dream of the UN comes true
Thus, Noah’s Children built a model society that knew no IDOLATRY, no ADULTERY, no THEFT and no war. The Seventy Families of Noah engaged in farming, trading, creating wealth based on private, family ownership. It was the DREAM OF THE UNITED NATIONS COMING TRUE.
If so, what corrupted their dream society? Why didn’t it last?
A warning to us
In our time, we tend to think that the best thing that can happen to Mankind is the dream of the UN coming true. If all nations recognize and respect each other borders, leave in peace, engage in building economy, believe in one faith and the same, one G-d, we would all be happy forever.
But here the Torah STARTS with such an ideal, peaceful society that had all those wonderful features happening in their lives, and yet evolved into the greatest tyranny ever known to Mankind, the Tyranny of King Nimrod and his Tower of Babel. And most strikingly, that fateful transition took place without anyone lifting a sword and without any oppressive police! How did that happen? Could it happen again to us, even after the dream of the UN comes true?
t seems that the Torah is warning us, our generation more than any one before us, that this danger can happen again, in big time! We should be aware of the danger and act accordingly.
I think that these chapters should be inscribed on the walls of the UN corridors, for all mankind to see and learn!
3: The Angelic Choir
This peace on Earth was accompanied with Peace in Heavens. Tradition says that as the Seventy Families settled in peace and one faith, the Morning Angelic Choir was also formed.
This putative Choir is still active today. It comprises of Seventy Angels, each representing one Family of Noah’s Nations. The Choir starts its daily chant at dawn, when the Sun rises over the Far East, nine hours east of Mt. Moriah and Jerusalem. Amazingly, although no rabbi could know this in ancient time, the Heavenly Morning begins exactly at the eastern shore of the Asian continent.
Then, as the rest of the Families of Nations wake up, their Angel join in the Choir one by one.
As a rule, one Angel would chant only one “holy.”
Three Angels in a row, would chant three holies: “Holy, Holy, Holy, the Earth is full of His Glory!” (Isaiah 6:3).
After three such cycles, nine hours from the east, the Sun rises over Mt. Moriah and Jerusalem.
At that point, the Choir pauses and waits for a human Nation to chant from Earth: “holy, holy, holy.” Only one nation would be allowed to do this.
Then, as the Sun continues its journey in the sky to the west, other Families of Noah Nations wake up one by one, and each joins the choir in its time.
As the Sun rises again on the Far East, a new Heavenly day begins.
At the time when the Choir was first formed, after the Flood, no single nation was yet appointed to chant from Earth “three times holy.” The position remained open till Jacob became Israel, a name that means: “One Who Chants with El,” with the Choir of El.
Next: how could this tranquil society transform itself to a ruthless, godless tyranny?
